FAQs:
What is an HVIL connector?
An HVIL (High Voltage Interlock Loop)connector is a safety-critical component used in high-voltage systems (e.g., electric vehicles) that incorporates a low-voltage monitoring circuit. Its primary function is to ensure that the high-voltage circuit is safely de-energized (powered off) before the main high-voltage pins are fully separated, thus preventing dangerous electrical arcing and protecting personnel from electrical shock.
How does the HVIL system work?
The HVIL creates a continuous, low-voltage signal loop that runs through all high-voltage connectors and components. If a connector is loosened or disconnected, this loop is broken. The Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) or Battery Management System (BMS) detects this break and automatically de-energizes the high-voltage system before the circuit is physically opened enough to cause an arc.
Why is the HVIL connector important?
Because it serves as a safety feature: the low-voltage interlock loop ensures that if any high-voltage connection is loose, disconnected, or faulted, the high-voltage circuit is disabled (or prevented from energizing) to protect users, service technicians, and the vehicle system.
What current and voltage ratings do HVIL connectors support?
Most HVIL connectors support current ratings from 16A to 250A and voltage levels up to 800V DC, depending on the model and application.
What materials are used in HVIL connectors?
They are constructed with PA66-GF for shell and Copper Alloy contacts for high conductivity and durability.
What are the applications of HVIL connectors?
They are used across high-voltage subsystems in electric and hybrid vehicles: battery pack connections, chargers (on-board/off-board), DC/DC converters, high-voltage accessories like heaters/compressors, etc. Also in industrial/storage high-voltage applications.
What cable sizes are compatible with HVIL connectors?
HVIL connectors support a range of cable cross-sections, typically from 2.5mm² to 50mm², depending on the current-carrying requirements.
What is the difference between a standard High Voltage (HV) Connector and an HVIL Connector?
A standard HV connector transfers high power but lacks the built-in safety monitoring. An HVIL Connector is a standard HV connector plus the integrated High Voltage Interlock Loop (HVIL) safety feature. The HVIL function is the low-voltage circuit that actively monitors the integrity of the connection.
What are the advantages of choosing Metabee HVIL connectors?
Metabee HVIL connectors feature factory-direct pricing, premium materials, precise engineering, and multiple configurations, ensuring reliable performance and safety in high-voltage systems.
